PHG Draft Management Plan 2014

The Patapsco Heritage Greenway (PHG) is spearheading a community effort to certify the Patapsco Valley as a Maryland Heritage Area. Available are downloads that describe the Valley heritage and the draft management plan along with the schedule for achieving Heritage Area certification.

Why have a Maryland Heritage Area?

There are twelve heritage areas in Maryland. Each honors the heritage values associated with their specific areas. (Go here to learn more about them) A Patapsco Heritage Area would be the thirteenth area in the state and will fill an important gap in the heritage tapestry of Maryland.

The Patapsco River Valley is rich with historical, cultural, archeological, and natural resources. Under the umbrella of a heritage designation the community can create programs to steward, interpret, attract visitors, and encourage the sustainable use of these resources. State certification will make available grants and loans to assist with these programs.

Wasn’t this done before?

The first step was completed in 2000. The current effort is the second step to gain “certification” by submitting an updated management plan for review at the state level. A copy of the earlier, 2000 Management Plan is here.

Who is involved?

Residents and local organizations have been involved through several public meetings. In addition PHG and its contractors have met with and briefed Heritage Partner organizations and key Baltimore County and Howard County personnel. We are using this website to make sure everyone who wants to be included will know of our progress and schedule. If you have any questions or comments send them to JohnB4993@gmail.com.
