The Garlic Mustard Challenge is held annually at the Avalon Area at the Patapsco
Valley State Park on the first Sunday of May. Many helped prevent Garlic Mustard
from encroaching on native wildflowers and later enjoyed live music, hikes
around the park, nature displays, story telling, an afternoon cooking contest,
and enjoying the bright colored posters drawn by young local artists.
To date, with the help of dedicated volunteers, we picked over 3,722 pounds of this invasive weed growing throughout Patapsco State Park. Immigrants originally brought garlic mustard here as a culinary herb. It is now crowding out native wildflowers in the woodlands. Be sure to join us for the next upcoming annual Garlic Mustard Challenge!
